Reflections of the Aftermath of Incarceration

Reflections of the Aftermath of Incarceration entails clips from interviews conducted with individual as they reflect on their personal experience with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. This video shares the raw experiences of eight individuals as they navigated the criminal justice system. Most of the people interviewed have served time in the Texas prison system, while one mother offers a point of view from family on the outside. Each of their full interviews can be found on the TAVP website in the archives.

About the Interviewer and Creator: Lovinah Igbani-Perkins is a native of Detroit, Michigan, but has spent the majority of her life in Houston and considers herself a proud Houstonian. After serving over 6 years in Texas prisons, soon after being released she made a decision to pursue a college degree and recently graduated with a Master of Social Work from SFA. In May of 2020 at the height of the pandemic, Lovinah agreed to an interview with TAVP's Sheltering Justice, which began a great relationship leading to her becoming an inaugural Visions After Violence Fellow in January 2022. This project is special to her because having no experience in video editing, this is her baby so to speak, a task she took on, thoroughly enjoyed, and had so much fun learning while working. Lovinah loves almost anything that involves an adrenaline rush or Mexican food and has a heart to help her fellow brothers and sisters who are still incarcerated.
