This interview was conducted virtually by Sam Kirsch with Andrew Hairston on May 10, 2023. Andrew Hairston is a writer, civil rights attorney, Black southerner, man of faith, bi guy, prison abolitionist, and socialist. Born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina in 1991, he’s the first child of two born to Reverend Dr. Daryl and Mrs. Karen J. Hairston. After stints in Indiana and Missouri, Andrew graduated from high school in Ohio before graduating from Howard University and Louisiana State University. Andrew describes his views evolving from reformist to abolitionist, his first run for Justice of the Peace in Travis County with Austin Democratic Socialists of America, being ordained as a deacon of Ebenezer Third Baptist Church and the meaning of community and love, fighting to get cops out of schools, and so much more. Sam Kirsch is an abolitionist who organizes his community to fight policing and prisons, and instead invest public resources into ending cycles of poverty and trauma.
